The next day, Tracey was preparing herself to speak with her parents about working. Since they were home early, she didn't have to wait long. She let them settle in then approached them. "Mom, Dad, can I talk to you?"
"What is it?"
"Well, I want a part time job. I know I don't need to help out around here, but if I'm making my own money, I won't be asking you two anymore."
"That's a nice idea but we don't have time to be your personal chuffer."
"I already thought that. I could get a job at the library near the school then catch a ride with one you after your shift."
"Yes, I suppose that would work. But be honest Tracey. Do you want this job just because you'll see that Trisha girl?"
Tracey hated the way her parents said Trisha's name. Venom oozed from their lips but somehow she managed to stay calm. "No, she won't be there. She doesn't have any desire to work in a library."
"Ok, you've got a deal. But, if your grades slip, say goodbye to the job."
Grinning, Tracey voiced many thanks and after dinner, raced up to her room to research the library. She was itching to call Trisha but calling her would eat up her cell phone's minutes. And texting wasn't on her plan. She'll have to share all tomorrow.
Back at Trisha's house, she was sharing her success with Demetri. "I got a job! And the restaurant is so cute! It's this little 50's diner near Dad's office. I get to serve food in a poodle skirt and everything."
Demetri chuckled at his sister's enthusiasm. "Sweet. Do Mom and Dad know?"
"Yeah. After school I'll catch the bus to the diner then come home with Dad after his work."
"Ouch. Long car rides home with Dad. Good luck."
Laughing, Trisha rolled eyes. Her brother loved to mess with her. "I'm pretty sure I'll survive. Besides, I need the money."
"True. Enjoy your animal-infested skirt."
Laughing again, Trisha playfully slapped his arm. "Oh shut up."
The next day at school went by pretty normally for Tracey. People avoided her and she avoided them. While walking to third period, she thought 'Jeez. It's like I have some contagious disease.' Arriving at her class early, she took her seat only to be bombarded by Trevor, the school pervert. "Hey Trish. Lookin' good."
"Look Trevor just go away. I'm not in the mood."
"Oh but I am. Besides, why be with some girly girl when a big, strong guy like me can make you feel so good."
At those words Trisha's hands balled into fists. If it weren't for the other students in the room, she would have killed him. "Trevor, back off! I have never liked you and I never will! And I swear if you insult Tracey again I will hurt you."
Muttering something under his breath that sounded like 'bitch', he sat down. For the first time in Trisha's life, she was happy for class to start. Later on in marketing, the girls once again passed notes and Trisha felt better knowing her girlfriend had a job as well. Sadly when class ended, the girls hugged and when no one was looking, quickly kissed before heading off to work. Upon arrival, Trisha quickly changed into her uniform and began serving. The diner was small yet packed. There were pictures on the walls of old actors and singers from the 50's and a song by Elvis was playing from the juke box. Trisha's outfit was a white t-shirt tucked into the waist band of her beige poodle skirt. On her feet were white tennis shoes. About an hour later, she made her way over to a certain table realizing it was her neighbor. No doubt this would be interesting. "Hi. What can I get you?"
"Trisha? Is that you? Well don't you look cute."
"Thank you Mrs. Trent."
"Your parents told me the news. Is it really true?"
"Yes, I'm with a girl."
"No not that. Are you really engaged?"
Trisha's eyebrows came together to produce a look of confusion. "What are you talking about?"
"Your parents have an arranged marriage for you darling. They ran into a little money trouble when they first married so the other couple made a deal. The debt would be dropped if you married their son."
Trisha felt as if her entire world was being turned upside down. All the plans she'd made with Tracey were being ripped from her hands. 'No…this can't be true…' she thought. 'My parents love me…right?' Mrs. Trent clearing her throat brought her back to reality. "Well, judging from your facial expression, I'm guessing you didn't know. I'm sorry Trish."
Reaching for her notepad, Trisha prepared to take the woman's order only to notice her hands were shaking. "I-it's alright. I'll talk to my father when he picks me up."
The rest of the shift went by in a blur. She went through the motions of being a waitress but all the while her mind was running fifty miles an hour with unanswered questions. When her father arrived, she barely let him say hello before she asked "Am I engaged!?"

Are arranged marriages still a thing this day and age?
